If you keep up with new technological advances or even Facebook, you might have come across the word Metaverse, or Meta – rebranded name for Facebook. With its launch in October 2021, Mark Zuckerberg the CEO of Meta Platforms has announced that Metaverse will leverage the latest technology and work in tandem with Web 3.0 to provide an immersive experience to the users, like it has never been done before by video games or retail businesses.
In Metaverse, the users will not only look at an experience but will be in it with the help of Virtual and Augmented Reality. In simple words, Metaverse is a combination of several elements of the latest technological advancements including augmented and virtual reality, allowing users to ‘live’ in the digital world.
Metaverse is not a new or unique concept in itself, many video games already provide the users to use their 3D digital avatars and do virtual activities that are extremely similar to real-life activities. However, what one can expect from Zuckerberg’s introduction of Metaverse is that it is becoming more mainstream in nature.
Would Metaverse change the way we see the world?
In many technological aspects, Metaverse will bring a huge change to many industries. Here is how Zuckerberg describes Metaverse to be the successor of the mobile internet:
- Elevate the physical world experience: Metaverse will try to mix augmented and virtual reality with physical world experience, to magnify the feeling of presence in the virtual reality. It will look forward to using the already existing cases of AR as a template to elevate the experience further. Since many stores already allow users to virtually try on a makeup look or how a piece of furniture would look in their home. Zuckerberg will take a step further and create a world where many physical objects will be holograms that will be created by the creators and consumers.
- Co-created and built responsibly: The primary focus of the Metaverse, according to Zuckerberg, is that multiple entities of society will work together to create a safe environment in the Metaverse. Some of the most important elements of the world-building in the Metaverse will include businesses, entrepreneurs, creators, policymakers etc. To ensure that Metaverse is built with integrity, privacy and safety of the users, open standards and interoperability will be at the core of the entire framework.
- Creating an identity from scratch: It wouldn’t matter who you are in real life, with Metaverse in place you will be able to create a whole new identity from scratch. It will typically allow the users to have a second life in the online space. Even though many people believe that Metaverse will be a more controlled, advertisement-supported environment, Zuckerberg is confident that it will bring a huge change in the way people will embrace the expanse of the internet and in the Metaverse itself.
Conclusion
As described by Mark Zuckerberg himself, CEO of Meta platforms, Metaverse will allow people to have the exact feeling of being with another person or at some other place. They believe that it is the ultimate dream of technology users to be truly present with another person and experience that immersive technology.
